GBTW, Great British Tennis Week

I’ve never been great at the whole eye-and-hand coordination thing, but I remember in high school, one of the few sports I could actually hit the ball in, was tennis. So, last year, when I heard about the Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW), I thought I’d check it out. My family and I visited the ClubSpark website to find local tennis clubs, chose a random one which we thought sounded nice and headed off to Frampton-on-Severn Tennis Club.

Frampton-On-Severn Tennis Club is set in beautiful surroundings, next to the River Severn, where you can see boats gently passing by and it just struck me as a gorgeous place to spend sunny days. We were greeted by some very friendly and enthusiastic tennis club members who couldn’t wait to share their love of tennis with us.

Bunny took to tennis like a duck to water (and yes, there were ducks in the river too!). The volunteers gave her a relaxed one-to-one session and she was soon hitting balls faster and higher than me.

The girls dad and I attempted tennis against each other and the volunteers gave us both some pointers to improve. If I’m completely honest, neither of us were particularly good and our little ball-girls (the twins – then 3 years old) were kept busy retrieving all the balls we missed!

Despite an evident lack of skill on my part, it was great fun and we were at the courts for a good hour or so. I loved how relaxed everything was, I enjoyed doing something different, out in the fresh air and sunshine with my family and it was lovely how keen the members were to help us.

The twins got to have a bash (literally) at tennis too, when the club members brought out some softer balls and smaller rackets so that they could have a little go. It showed that GBTW is about family fun and is suitable for all ages.

The GBTW has come around again and this year is on Saturday 16th July & Sunday 17th July. GBTW tennis sessions are free, suitable for all the family and there are clubs all across the UK ready to welcome you. You can search for your local participating tennis club by looking on the ClubSpark website.

It was quite busy but they made sure everyone got a decent amount of time on the courts (think we had about an hour) and some one-to-one coaching time with the members. They were very passionate about their club.
