One of the highlights of the house we live in, is the big garden. One of the not-so-good things about this garden is that when we moved in, it was just a wild field of weeds and gravel, but we saw it as potential. We have already done a lot of work on pulling up weeds and we have big plans to remove all the gravel and put down a lawn. I like grass. It’s nice for picnics, it’s nice for Bunny to practise her gymnastics, it looks nice and it’s much more child-friendly when it comes to playing outside.
When we moved in, we weeded, dug the soil and planted flowers in one of the flower beds. It looked beautiful, until winter came and killed all the flowers. Then spring came and brought… well I don’t know. Some green stuff. Are they weeds or are they flowers? It would be really useful to know, because in the unlikely event that something pretty might reflower, I don’t want to be digging it up and throwing it away with the weeds. If I knew the names of the flowers I planted last year, I could Google them… but I don’t! I know very little about gardening, but I’m hoping some of my readers, might know something. If you do know any of these, please comment with the letter corresponding to each photo and whether you think it is a weed or not-a-weed. You know what… even if you don’t know, you’re welcome to guess, and you can find out how well you scored, when someone knowledgeable in gardening comes along!
Let the games commence…
Weed or No Weed?
Hmm… yes okay, the scary thing is… that’s about all I know about gardening! Let’s see if you can do better?

I am no gardener, so I am not sure, but the leaves on C look like our lentern rose. J looks like it might be dandelion, and I’d get rid of that as they speed very quickly. I love H. Xx
E is definitely a weed probably a thistle! I think J is probably a weed too! I looks like a plant called forget me nots (flower blue with yellow middles!) G and H are both flowers I think, G could be a primula/primrose and the blue ones on H are abundant in my garden I just can’t think what they are called! F probably a bulb you have planted such as an Iris or something similar! The rest I am not sure of!
Haven’t got the foggiest!!

If it was my garden I would say B, G, J, K, L are all weeds, but then I’m bot sure of the difference between a weed and a wild flower?! If K has fuzzy leaves & stems that sticks to your clothes then it’s a weed that spreads really quickly and chokes other plants so that’ll need to come out definitely!
Great game, I should do the same for my garden!
Okay, I can recognise a few of yours though, so here are my thoughts:
A: Doesn’t look like a weed to me, but not sure what it is, I’m afraid.
B: I think it’s a weed
C: Pretty sure it’s a hellebore (AKA Lenten Rose) as someone said above…
D: Not weed, though not sure what
E: Weed
F: Some sort of bulbs coming up, you should get flowers fairly soon
G: Not sure
H: Grape hyacinths — lovely!
I: I think this might be forget-me-not leaves
J: Weed
K: A weed called cleavers, gets everywhere
L: Weed. I think.
Hope this helps. Am sure you’ll get lots more good responses too!

haha great game – I am no expert but from the little I have learnt from hubs, E, J and K are weeds and I think L is too if it’s as small as I think it is? No idea what the others are tho they could be plants ๐ We’ve had to do loads on our garden since we move in too and I agree grass is so much lovelier for kiddies ๐ #hdygg

Hi,
I’m no expert. A looks like a flower, but not sure. I think B is a weed, but has fairly pretty bright blue flowers (I think). F looks like a bulb, possibly daffodils? H are grape hyacinths (small bulbs). I’m pretty sure L is a weed that has small white flowers. Hope I’m not wrong….
E,G,I, J and L *might* be weeds but I’m no expert! I work on a ‘let it grow and if it looks nice it can stay’, but if it grows and grows and still nothing it’s off to the compost heap with it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if more pops up throughout the year to surprise you too! Great having an outside space you can all use, getting it sorted to how you want it always take hard work but it’s so rewarding when it’s done.
Thanks for joining in Emma x
This sounds all too familiar to me! I am sure I have left weeds and ripped out some lovely plants in our garden! E & J are definitely weeds but the rest would flummox me!!

I are forget me nots and self seed very easily which is good or bad depending on your preference. H are hyacinth, I bet they smell lovely. J and K are weeds but the rest I don’t know. But I guess they are only weeds if you don’t want them there, some weeds have very pretty flowers! #hdygg

No expert here either but if I had to make a call I’d say B, E, J, K, L look like weeds. I’d leave the rest for a bit and see if I liked the look of them, in my book it’s only a weed if it’s in the wrong place, crowding out other plants you like more, or just plain ugly!

I have no idea, I am clueless when it comes to gardening but I do appreciate a nice garden. We moved into a newbuild and have had to start from scratch. Good luck with it x
I went through this last year and Instagrammed a really beautiful flower, which I was told is bindweed and really nasty stuff! Hopefully we’ll do better this year, but I’m still not great. I say F is a daffodil and J is a dandelion!

I wouldn’t consider any of them weeds unless I decide I don’t like the look of them or they cause damage to something.
Some weeds have the loveliest flowers, worth letting them to grow to see what they do

This is great! When we moved to our new house last year, the best part was the garden. We had never had a garden before we moved here so we were enthusiasts and we quickly learned what we needed to do. It is wonderful to have a garden! We started with growing vegetables and herbs. We have also flowers and two small pair trees! Good luck with your garden! Have a lot of fun!
I use vinegar to remove any weed in my backyard. Keep posting!
