I was thinking the other day about the things we buy. We seem to have a lot of stuff in our house, but none of it was really that expensive. We don’t generally buy second hand, but we are bargain hunters through and through. I use search engines to find the cheapest price and then I look for voucher codes online. When I’m ready to buy, I then go through cashback websites to get some money back afterwards.
So what are my top three, most expensive family purchases I’ve ever bought?
1) My car. My first car was a gift from my dad. It was only 6 months old and he decided he’d rather I drove a new one around, than an old one that breaks down on a regular basis. I loved that car. It was bright yellow and gave me many great memories of young adulthood with my friends. I still had that car when I had my first child too. Sadly, after 6 years and over 120,000 miles, the little 1.2 car needed a new engine. I sold it to a mechanic for £800. Not bad for a car with no engine! A few cars later and a few children later, I bought a big 7 seater people carrier, with sliding doors and lots of space. It was my first automatic and I got it on finance. At £5k, this car is the single most expensive thing I have ever bought.
2. Second on my list of most expensive family purchases, is our sofa. Back in 2009 I bought a big black leather corner sofa. This sofa was a much cherished piece of furniture for about 7 years. Being wipe-clean meant it was brilliant with children and not the end of the world when something was spilt. It was a proper family sofa. A sofa full of cuddles and both happy and sad memories. A sofa that had seen many a dinner spilt on it. A sofa that has nursed us through hangovers, illnesses, Cancer, pregnancies, new babies, good news, bad news, grief, love and everything else our family has been through together. A sofa I wasn’t sure I would be ready to part with. But with family changes, came a tidier, more houseproud me, a large family dining table for mealtimes, more modern living room décor and a newer, even bigger sofa. A softer, comfier, more stylish sofa to see us grow as a family. And this newer sofa, was an even bigger investment (£1400), but seemingly even more worthwhile as more cuddles and more laughter are shared within it’s comfort.
3) My bed. Back when I was pregnant with the twins and Bunny kept climbing into my bed for cuddles in the mornings. I knew it’d be a bit of a squash in a double with three children climbing in for morning cuddles, so we decided to upgrade. We bought a super king sized bed and a brand new mattress with around a thousand springs and a deep memory foam top. Full price, the bed was over a grand and the mattress was around two grand. Luckily after some bargain hunting, during the sales, with vouchers, cashback and everything else, we spent about £1300 for the whole lot, making it third in my list of most expensive family purchases.
What’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought?
