On Monday, I was lucky enough to be invited to the Houses of Parliament for an exclusive press conference on the Saatchi Bill.
The Saatchi Bill aims to give doctors the freedom to use innovative new treatments on Cancers and other illnesses with poor outcomes. You all know... I have Cancer. So this bill is very close to my heart. Currently, any doctors wishing to use innovative new treatments, are liable for litigation on grounds of neglect. Because of this, treatments such as Chemotherapy haven't changed much in 40 years. Some Cancer's are a death sentence, not because the treatments aren't out there, or because Doctor's don't want to use them - but because they are not allowed.
The Saatchi Bill will change all that and allow Doctors to trial new treatments, after appraisal from a multi-disciplinary panel. This could enable someone a much greater chance of finding the cure for Cancer and improve the outcomes of many Cancer treatments.
I'm going to write a full, in depth and more personal account of the Saatchi Bill later in the week, but I wanted to briefly outline it before the Ten Minute Rule Bill airs tomorrow.
Why am I posting this for Wednesday Words? Because at the press conference, there was a very wise quote said, which proves how necessary the Saatchi Bill really is.
It was Albert Einstein.
Think about the age old Cancer treatment's which have low survival rates. Think about the fact Doctors are not currently allowed to change the treatments on offer. Then read this...
Albert Einstein's definition of Insanity:
"Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"
Isn't that what is happening with these archaic treatments? Doesn't that mean that current law is insanity?
Insanity Vs The Saatchi Bill.
The Saatchi Bill is going through the House of Commons as a Ten Minute Rule Bill tomorrow. I suggest you all watch Michael Ellis Medical Innovation (2) here.
Check back later in the week for my full post on the Saatchi Bill.
And for something a little less heavy... here's the WednesdayWords linkups...

This is crazy and so frustrating. We have such an ‘accountability’ culture now that everyone’s terrified of getting sued; terrible when that means people could lose their lives as a result.

Such a strong post. One clearly so close to your heart. It also touches mine as a good friend is currently very ill with cancer. I think you picked a very appropriate quote xx

Thank you so much for including the Saatchi Bill in your #WednesdayWords. It is a very powerful quote isn’t it and sums up medical innovation very succinctly.
It was lovely to meet you and I look forward to reading your full post.
